Ojai Youth Opera - Brundibar
OJAI YOUTH OPERA PROUDLY PRESENTS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OPERA SANTA BARBARA & SANTA BARBARA YOUTH SYMPHONY, OUR 2017 FEATURED PRODUCTION, BRUNDIBAR!
A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST TO RECLAIM THE PRESENT.
Brundibár is a charming children's folk opera with a message of hope & inclusion that still rings true today, First performed in 1942 with children of the Jewish orphanage in Prague, Czech composer Hans Krasa reconstructed his opera from memory after he was sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943. Theresienstadt was Hitler's "model camp," its squalor hidden from visitors by false facades.
The opera was performed fifty-five times by the children of the camp and the Nazis even sold tickets. While the children were onstage playing their roles in 1943 and 1944, they lived some of the last happy hours of their short lives creating this masterful work of art. After the last performance, the children were shipped to Auschwitz and fewer than twenty of the many children who had participated in Brundibár survived the war. After the death of Krasa and the liberation of the camp, the opera fell out of sight, but not forever. The vices of Ojai Youth Opera (OYO) now echo the message of Brundibár, one of hope that has touched countless audiences all over the world for the past seventy years. Ela Weissberger, the lone surviving member of the cast from the original production in Theresienstadt, will be in attendance at Libbey Bowl. We ar honored that she is coming to Ojai for a once-in-a lifetime performance. Join us for an uplifting musical evening!
OYO is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for additional facets of the production, including creation of a traveling version of the show and our educational outreach program, and creation of a documentary film that will generate a higher octave of lasting cultural conversation. Please consider donating.
